Fleets have long sought to reduce vehicle speed to help prevent crashes and to reduce crash severity. Speed limiters represent the first level of intervention and have been commonly used for several decades. However, speed limiters only limit top speed (e.g., 65 mph) and do little or nothing to prevent speed crashes in areas with lower speed limits (e.g., school zones). Hence, fleets are exploring additional solutions to drive further reductions in claims costs.

Over the past few years, fleets have deployed additional tools (beyond speed limiters) to alert drivers with patterns of speeding behavior for coaching and progressive discipline, if necessary. Some use in-cab notifications (e.g., ELD screen messages, audible alerts) to get drivers to change their behavior in the moment. Cutting edge fleets have begun pairing in-cab notifications with the use of technology that automatically reduces the speed of the vehicle based on speed limit or, in some cases, the presence of risk (e.g., low bridge, rollover potential).

Join this panel discussion to learn how fleets have used various technologies and approaches to drive down risky speed events. They will discuss the tools they used and their results. Specifically, they will share real-world results both in terms of crash rate improvement, claims cost reduction, and driver acceptance.
