In October 2007, Lieutenant Colonel Darling retired from the United States Marine Corps with just over twenty years of active-duty service. He flew attack helicopters in Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the first Gulf War and in Somalia, Africa, in support of Operation Restore Hope. In June 1998, he was selected to fly as a presidential pilot with Marine Helicopter Squadron One and in October 2000, was handpicked to work for the White House Military Office, Airlift Operations Department. Specializing in auto and cargo theft for 14 years, Gary has played a pivotal role in numerous complex criminal investigations, leading to successful prosecutions in both state and federal courts. In recognition of his outstanding service, he was honored as the 2023 Civilian of the Year before retiring in 2024.

Officer Dennis K. Johnson has served with the Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Branch since 2011. In 2018, he joined the Programs Support Branch, which focuses on compliance operations. Officer Johnson is cross-trained to conduct both compliance reviews and safety audits, bringing a well-rounded and thorough approach to commercial vehicle oversight.

He then founded Birdseye Security Solutions, bringing operational and facility management solutions to the Trucking, Logistics and Automotive sectors. Over the last 15 years serving as CEO of Birdseye, Mike has honed his expertise in cargo theft deterrence and remote facility management, leveraging the opportunity that technology – and more recently, AI – bring to the industry.

Dan Horvath is the Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Safety Policy at the American Trucking Associations. Dan joined ATA in March of 2018 as Director of Safety Policy after more than five years as Director of Compliance and Safety at TransForce Inc. Prior to that role, Dan was a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration auditor, examining new commercial carriers for regulatory compliance.

Chris is the Director of Safety at M&W Transportation in Nashville, TN. He’s an active member of the Tennessee Trucking Association, serving as the Chair of the council Steering Committee, Secretary of the Safety Council, and anything else they need him to do! Chris was the 2021 TTA Safety Professional of the Year and in that same year, M&W was awarded the TTA Grand Champion Trophy. Chris has also been a past speaker at SSHR. In 2022, M&W was awarded the ATA President’s Trophy – trucking’s most prestigious award.
